    <description>At the moment, 6800 PCs in Munich are based on open source, of the in total 15 thousand PC's in use in the city administration. At the end of this year, some 8500 will be switched over from the proprietary operating system to an open source operating system, and in 2013 some 12000 to 13000 will have been migrated.</description>

A few months ago, the city decided to move from  Debian GNU/Linux to its derivative Ubuntu. According to Maier, that is  mainly because the decision makers are attracted by Ubuntu's long term  support offering and hardware compatibility.</p>
